It’s finally June which means days at the pool, barbeques with friends, running outside… and a new Wine Down Wednesday instructor starting June 4th! We’d like to welcome Elena King.
Tell us a little bit about yourself!
I grew up in Russia and moved here in 2001. I went to SLU, married (we’ve been married 10 years in July!), and I have one kid. I love to travel! My dream is to live somewhere with the beach out my front door and the mountains out back.Where do you practice and teach?
I teach at Valley Vanyasa in Chesterfield, but I also teach private, in-home yoga for people. That allows for a lot more personal attention to practice good alignment and personalized focus on the areas you need. What’s your favorite way to stay active?
Yoga!!!What does "Move Nourish Believe" mean to you?
It’s much like yoga because yoga is all about movement and breaths. In yoga you’re nourished but it’s not just physical, it is also emotional. What made you love yoga?
For many years I practiced sporadically and after having a baby, yin yoga was the only thing that helped feel normal again. I started practicing very regularly, both yin and normal yoga, so then the next logical step was to get my teaching certification. I was certified a little over two years ago.
So, what is yin yoga? Can somebody who rarely does yoga come to your #WDW class?
Look at the Valley Vanyasa website for an explanation of yin yoga. I lead a workshop about yin yoga once every three months, so the next one will be in September.
Wine Down Wednesday, #WDWSTL, is every Wednesday from 6-7 here at Dimvaloo. Elena will lead yoga and afterwards we will relax with wine and friends. You can learn more about Elena here and keep track of the event on Facebook.

I was super obsessed with India when I was little, and so naturally something that became very interesting to me as I got a bit older was yoga. "The first couple times I took an actual yoga class in a studio, I was so bored that I actually once faked a coughing fit, left the room (and my rental mat) and went to the gym next door to take a step aerobics class."
"When I took my first Vinyasa class though - that's when I fell in love." Later that night, actually, I got on the phone with my friend who had taught the class and demanded more information on how to become a teacher myself. That was in the fall of 2007, and I was graduated from my first teacher training in March of 2008. I binged on teacher trainings and workshops for the next couple years, immediately finding a job at a yoga studio in Boulder, Colorado. I eventually became buyer/merchandiser at that studio and then later the associate studio director.

Favorite Yoga Pose: Triangle. It makes me feel dynamic and open. It's challenging and freeing.
Yoga Advice: Approach with an open mind. The best way to advance your practice is to maintain physical and mental awareness.

"...I teach for so many reasons. Teaching comes naturally for me in many ways. I know that I am simply giving people permission to be themselves. We can easily feel like we need to perform on the mat and do the poses "right." Overcoming this false belief is the "yoga," not the poses themselves. On a purely physical level, and for athletes specifically, yoga is incredible for injury prevention, improved breath capacity, and overall performance. Once you feel the difference, you'll be hooked for life...."
